Bone Zone (2nd Grade)
“Mr. Bones” joins us for this fun and interactive study of the
skeletal system. Second-graders have fun while learning how to build
strong bones and prevent osteoporosis. They learn what their bones do
for them and how calcium, vitamin D and exercise are important in
order to prevent this silent disease. They also learn that bones
protect the heart, lungs, liver and other body parts. Students have
fun singing, dancing and cheering while listening to a story about
bone health.
Fit for Life (7th—8th Grade)
Fit for Life helps students understand the importance of bone health
as it relates to an overall lifetime of good health and osteoporosis
prevention. Students learn the importance of assuming responsibility
for personal health behaviors. They also learn how eating disorders,
alcohol, caffeine, smoking and lack of exercise can result in loss of
bone. Food for Thought (9th—12th Grade)
Food for Thought is a nutrition education program that discusses body
image, self-esteem and social pressures that cause eating disorders
such as anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating. Obesity and its
consequences are explained as the students learn how to make their own
healthy food choices using the Food Guide Pyramid. Students also
discuss the role of the media in influencing their body image and how
they can have control of their bodies. During this program, students
also learn about medical problems that result from eating disorders,
obesity and poor nutrition choices. Families Building Strong Bones (Adults)
Families Building Strong Bones is designed to educate the public about
the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Participants
will get an overview of how their bones grow and need to be taken care
of. We discuss the risk factors for osteoporosis, diagnostic
procedures and various treatment options that are available.
Participants also learn about lifestyle changes that can be made to
prevent osteoporosis and reduce the risk of fractures. This program
can also include free bone density screenings. This is a great program
for a staff in-service! HOTS (Health Occupations Teachers
Symposium) is an annual workshop for Guidance Counselors,
Occupational Specialists, and Health Occupations Teachers to learn
ways to better help their students prepare for the health field.
Representatives from local community colleges, HOSA (Health
Occupations Students of America), and the Department of Education
provide teachers with curriculum updates, trends, and general program
information to best help their students navigate entry into the health
professions.
Healthy Students Healthy Schools is a one-day workshop offering
training needed to participate effectively on the school health care
team. Held annually, the topics relate to school health such as
asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, first aid, sports injury, medication
administration, and legal/ethical issues.
