The Suwannee River AHEC Tobacco Program has five main components:
Group Cessation Classes – Community members join other tobacco users to learn effective ways to quit for good and have a support system as they quit together. The group sessions are held once per week for six weeks and use the Quit Smoking Now curriculum.
Individual Consultations – Tobacco Treatment Specialists and Consultants work directly with tobacco users to help them quit tobacco and register them in a Quit Smoking Now group.
Continuing Education – Suwannee River AHEC provides continuing education and continuing medical education credits to health professionals. Topics covered include: helping patients quit, nicotine replacement therapy and non-nicotine pharmacotherapy, addiction, brief interventions, motivational interviewing, billing options and referring tobacco users to Quit Smoking Now group classes and the Florida Quit-for-Life Line.
ATTAC (AHEC Tobacco Training and Cessation) - Health professions students enrolled in local community colleges learn skills to help their future patients quit tobacco.
Community Health Workers (CHW) – Community members are trained to provide tobacco cessation and prevention messages to their peers.
