Suwannee River AHEC implements programs and services within 12 counties (Alachua, Bradford, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Marion, Putnam, Suwannee, Union) encompassing 8,422 square miles that are largely rural in nature and support an average population density of 90 people per square mile. Suwannee River AHEC’s service area reaches a total of 918,480 persons. The U.S. Department of Health Resources and Services Administration has designated all 12 counties as medical, dental, or mental healthcare shortage areas with medically underserved areas or populations.
